Porsche only recently began sales of the 992.2-generation 911, but the sports car was already hit with a recall. With the rear fog lights activated, the low-beam headlights have the potential to glare other road users. Eight-hundred seventy-eight cars are potentially affected, all built between June and December of last year.
The news comes to our attention via CarBuzz, which reported on the recall over the weekend. The new 911 has all its front lighting functions integrated into a single unit. According to the recall report, the driver’s side low beam lowers by 0.57 degrees when the driver activates the rear fog lights, which contravenes the federal safety standard on vehicle lighting. Thankfully, the fix is simple; a dealer-performed software update for a front body-control module.
Porsche has two lighting systems for the new 911, both all-LED; the optional HD-Matrix Design LED use 32,000 LED pixels to carry out all lighting functions. We’ve reached out to Porsche Cars North America to confirm if the recall affects one or both lighting systems, and we’ll update when we hear back. Porsche will notify dealers of the recall next week, and it will send out notices to owners in April.
Coincidentally, the 2023 911 was also recalled last week for rear seatbelt bolts that could come undone. On the 279 cars potentially affected, employees installed an aluminum sound-deadening panel in the wrong place, and it comes in to contact with the seatbelt bolt. Over time, vibration can loosen the bolt. Porsche determined in testing that this could happen, but has no field reports of the rear seatbelt bolts coming undone.
The fix involves tightening the bolts and moving the sound-proofing panel as needed. As with the other recall, Porsche is notifying dealers next week and owners in April.
