2025 Ford Expedition — Whatchu’ Building?

Ford just overhauled the Expedition for 2025. Now in its fifth generation, the full-size family vehicle has a host of refinements that make it more capable of hauling cargo and its occupants.

Changes made to all Expeditions include an interior revamp that takes cues from the just-as-new Lincoln Navigator. The Ford works with a 24-inch horizontal display on the dashboard, utilizing the remaining space for an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system.

The exterior also received a styling overhaul, with a fresh design and a rad feature that’s making a comeback: the split tailgate. It’s power-operated and includes seat backs that double as tables. It’s also rated at 500 pounds, making it the perfect accessory for tailgating parties.

2025 Ford Expedition Tremor

Despite the changes, the dimensions remain virtually unchanged. Still, ample interior room allows cross-shoppers to compare it to the refreshed Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban for 2025.

The engine is essentially a carry-over. All Expeditions rely on a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 good for 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet of torque. That drives the rear or all four wheels via a ten-speed automatic.

Now that the 2025 Ford Expedition configurator is live, we can confirm pricing on the shortened trim roster, build a few models, and analyze the end results.

All about that base: MAX Active

Not only did the XL disappear, but so did the XLT. The 2025 Ford Expedition gained new names for a couple of trim levels while retaining two familiar ones. The Active now sits at the bottom of the roster, which is arguably where the Expedition carries the most value.

The Active already includes an extensive list of standard features, such as a 10-way powered driver’s seat, an 8-way passenger seat, alloy wheels, the aforementioned 24-inch horizontal display and the 13.2-inch center touchscreen that controls it, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360-degree camera, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and trailer backup assist.

Opting for the MAX lengthens the Expedition by 12 inches, up to 222 inches end-to-end. This is the first option I would pick as it already starts at $63,695. Going bigger is a relatively small price to pay for an additional $3,000.

The other option I would tick is the 20-inch two-tone wheels over the standard 18-inch ones. This requires you to select the Active Touring Edition Equipment Group though, a $4,215 package that throws in even more features.

Key highlights include a panoramic sunroof with a power sunshade, a wireless charging pad, keyless entry on all doors, a movable center console, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding heated mirrors, a power tilt-telescoping steering wheel with memory and heat functions, and heated front seats with upgraded upholstery.

Although the Active offers an array of seven paint colors, it’s a basic palette of whites, silvers, and black, so I didn’t bother with a paint charge. The total of the Expedition MAX Active comes to $70,910.

Bronze takeover: King Ranch

Now that we’ve explored the base model, let’s look at the opposite end of the spectrum. The King Ranch serves as the top-end model, and wow, get ready for bronze galore.

Fords of yesteryears typically gave subtle cues that you were driving a King Ranch besides the staple brown leather seats. That’s not the case here. The Expedition nets exterior trim accents and 22-inch wheels that are included regardless of paint color.

In this case, we’re keeping the Oxford White paint from the MAX Active build because every Expedition has a blackened upper liftgate, regardless of the trim. The interior is clad in Premium Del Rio leather seating surfaces, also finished in brown as you might expect.

The second-row captain’s chairs are power-folding, with the Bang & Olufsen Unleashed stereo capable of reaching all three rows thanks to its 22 speakers and single subwoofer setup.

Ford’s continuous damping suspension, one year of hands-free BlueCruise, one year of wireless connectivity, such as a 5G hotspot, an advanced suite of active safety features known as Co-Pilot360 Active 2.0, the heavy-duty towing package, deployable running boards, interior zone lighting, and flexible seating for the third row are also included. Four-wheel drive is standard.

Given that this is already the highest trim available, the only options left besides the paint are accessories. On that front, I threw in black crossbars for $260, the Cargo Protection package for $490, an engine block heater for $190, and a Cargo Area Platform cover for $690.

Even though it’s an option, I opted for the shorter-length Expedition King Ranch because I can’t imagine the clientele would want children tracking muddy soccer cleats over the rich leather. All in, this King Ranch build comes to $87,200.

Adventure is out there: Tremor

Saving the best for last, the 2025 Ford Expedition Tremor is a new trim for this model year that is solely available in standard form and not as a MAX variant.

But that’s okay because the Tremor seems to rise up to the off-road occasion with a unique fascia. In addition to the expanded color palette, the Expedition Tremor wears yellow accents on the wheels and front bumper, including the tow hooks. The grille embeds auxiliary lights while skid plates protect the front axle, transfer case, and fuel tank. In addition, the Tremor wears 33-inch General Grabber all-terrain tires to complement the 10.6 inches of ground clearance.

Here’s a good rule of thumb: off-road slated models should offer a green paint option. The Expedition Tremor doesn’t disappoint, wearing Wild Green that matches the perforations of the black leather interior. Comfort interior features include power-adjustable pedals with memory, heated seats for the first and second rows, and a powered center console for easier second-row access.

The Tremor uses the High Output variant of the 3.5-liter engine, upping the power to 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. This should bode well off the beaten path, as should the 3.73 electronic locking differential and dedicated drive mode system that includes a rock crawl feature. A trail control system is also included with turning assist, one-pedal driving, and four-wheel-drive come standard of course.

Besides the Wild Green paint, which didn’t come as an extra charge, I kitted out the Tremor with accessories that I think would be useful for a wilderness adventure. I selected roof bars again for $260, the Underbody Shield for $425, a console vault for $360, and a Ford-labeled safety kit for $60. A Bang & Olufsen system, albeit with a mere ten speakers, doesn’t hurt to have when you’re trying to hurdle a log.

Looking at the bottom line, this isn’t much cheaper than the 2025 King Ranch. Despite both of these two representing the higher end of the lineup, they couldn’t be more different. The 2025 Expedition Tremor of my dreams comes to $84,725.

Final thoughts

Despite its shortened trim offerings for 2025, the Ford Expedition gains more features and a more capable off-road offering in the Tremor that replaces the Timberline edition. It’s slated to arrive in dealerships next spring.
